In 1999, Astbury and Duffy reformed The Cult with Matt Sorum and ex-Porno for Pyros bassist Martyn LeNoble. Their first official concert was at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in June 1999, after having rehearsed at shows in the Los Angeles area. The band's 1999 Cult Rising reunion tour resulted in a sold out 30 date tour of the US, ending with 8 consecutive sold out nights at the LA House of Blues. In 2000, the band toured South Africa for the first time, and North and South America, and contributed the song "Painted on My Heart" to the soundtrack of the movie Gone In 60 Seconds. The song was featured prominently and the melody was fused into parts of the score. In June, Astbury's long-delayed solo record was finally released as Spirit\Light\Speed, but it failed to gain much success. In November 2000, another authorised greatest hits compilation was released, Pure Cult: The Singles 1984–1995, along with an accompanying DVD, which was later certified gold in Canada.

November 2000, Beggars Banquet released 15000 copies of a six-disc boxset (with a bonus seventh disc of remixes for the first 5000 copies) titled Rare Cult. The boxset consists of album out-takes, demos, radio broadcasts, and album B-sides. It is most notable for including the withdrawn "Peace" album in its entirety

Rare Cult Box Set
A limited-edition, 6-CD box set of 90 tracks including 78 previously unreleased in the US and 48 previously unreleased anywhere. All tracks are studio (not live) recordings and include all studio B sides, the full Peace album (aka the "Manor Sessions"), complete radio sessions, 12" mixes, alternate versions and out-takes, unreleased masters and work-in-progress demos. The box also includes an 80-page booklet. Some copies include a bonus 7th CD of additonal mixes and extended versions released on the original singles.

Best of Rare Cult is a compilation of selected songs from the Rare Cult seven-CD box set, released in November 2000. This collection also includes some songs not featured in the box set. The cover artwork was originally going to be used for The Cult's "Soldier Blue" single in 1987, but when the planned release was abandoned, the artwork was unused. It was then adapted for use as the cover for this release.

Rare Cult Box Set: The Demo Sessions
Limited to 3000 numbered copies. Set was only available via mail-order from Beggars Banquet's online shop. Seventy-seven tracks, 51 of which are previously unreleased, all of which are broken down into three parts: The E.Zee Demos, The Sonic Temple Demos, and Demos 1986 ~ 1989 ~ 1991. Each part comes in a gatefold or tri-fold digipack case with a booklet containing extensive liner notes and artwork from the actual demo tapes. All digipacks fit into a larger cardboard slipcase.

"Painted on My Heart" is a single by The Cult, released in 2000 in promotion of the film Gone in 60 Seconds. It was written by Diane Warren.
